← Back to Build a Driver-Worthy Job
A bigger gross number does not always mean a better job.
W-2 and 1099 are not simply two different ways to print a paycheck. The correct classification depends on the real working relationship, not merely what the contract calls the driver.
W-2 employment
The employer generally handles payroll withholding and pays the employer share of Social Security and Medicare taxes. Depending on the job and employer, the arrangement may also include workers' compensation, unemployment coverage, health benefits, retirement benefits, paid time off, or other employment benefits.
Independent contractor
A legitimate independent contractor generally takes on more responsibility for taxes, insurance, benefits, recordkeeping, and business expenses.
PEO assistance
Benefits and payroll administration may be practical through a PEO. Professional Human Resources works with a network of experienced and accredited agents who work with Professional Employer Organizations. A PEO relationship does not automatically reduce costs, resolve worker-classification questions, or fit every carrier — the carrier and its professional advisers remain responsible for evaluating the arrangement.
